Training for a half marathon isn’t the only challenge I am presenting myself with. There’s also the whole paying for this part. Being a one income family, you learn quickly where to save when you can. And it’s hard in today’s world. Add that with the fact that I am horrible with actually saving money, and it could be a recipe for disaster. Sure, I shop sales, am extremely coupon savvy, and know how to stretch our dollars, but when it comes to actually putting money away, it’s not one of my stronger suits. Sure, we have savings, but saving for something smaller and tucking money away has never been something I am good at. I start tucking it away and then something pops up, my self control not to spend goes out the window, I have every intention of replacing what I have saved, and well, when it comes time, I end up short.
So what’s a girl to do when she is no good at keeping money from herself? Well I’ve come up with a couple of different ideas. The first will be gift cards. Disney makes gift cards that you can use for anything Disney, not just in their stores, but also to pay for hotels, meals, park tickets, etc. So I have decided that with my small weekly paycheck(I work a small online job from home), I am going to buy a $25 Disney gift card. I won’t be able to spend it, so it’ll be saved. I’ve also started my own piggy bank. My kids have tons of piggy banks and whenever I get change I divide it among them. But not anymore kids! My change will go into my own little piggy bank. One that I got all crafty with, painted, bedazzled and ribboned out.
I’m still looking for creative ways to save, but think I’m off to a good start.
